Purpose of This Blog

The purpose of this blog is to share ideas related to integrating music in the general education elementary classroom. I am a general elementary teacher but I have a lot of knowledge about music and music-related activities that comes from my involvement in dance, instrumental music, and color guard through most of my life. I am a supporter of music education and I feel that I have an important role to play as a general education teacher in supporting music teacher colleagues, students interested in pursuing music, and the importance of music in education. Music has always had a powerful role in my life and I want to do what I can to help future students enjoy music as well.

I created this blog as part of a project for a masters course at Michigan State University on teacher inquiry. I plan to use it to reflect on my own musical experiences, inquire into my interests and goals for using music in the classroom, and record ideas I gather from other teachers as I collect them for the project. In the next few posts I plan to describe my personal experiences in the different musical activities I've been involved in - dance, concert band, marching band, and color guard - along with some descriptions of the types of music I prefer to listen to and why.

Some information on my background: I have a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from Michigan State University. In Michigan I'm certified to teach all subjects in grades K-5 and self-contained classroom K-8, along with English and mathematics in grades 6-8. During the 2010-2011 school year I did a full year of student teaching as part of MSU's teacher ed. program. I student taught in a 3rd grade class in Southfield, MI. During the 2011-2012 school year I taught a 3rd/4th multi-age class at a charter school in Howell, MI. I'm working on a Master of Arts degree in Teaching and Curriculum with a concentration in educational technology.

For more information on the project I'm working on feel free to read my research plan on Google Docs.
